All about AWARE

AWARE is a parent-run group supporting families of autistic children & young people (formal diagnosis not required).

The group covers the Airedale, Wharfedale, Bradford and Craven areas and beyond.

Members include families and supporters in general, as well as health, education and social care professionals.

Autistic children, young people and their families deserve timely access to understanding, support and community. Whether you are seeking diagnosis, have received a diagnosis or self identify there are resources and connections available to help you thrive.

AWARE can support families through the maze of local services which cross health, social care and education boundaries. We can advise about about accessing appropriate support from statutory, voluntary and private services, which can make a huge difference to an autistic person, helping them to find environments where they can succeed, whilst being valued for who they are and feeling supported and understood.

We also run a whole range of events and activities for children, young people and parents/carers. Please see our Events and Groups page for more information.

We welcome membership from all backgrounds – you can join AWARE here.

AWARE Values:

1) Valuing the individual – each autistic person has a unique story that is valued by AWARE who support them to thrive on their own journey

2) A place to belong and be understood – AWARE walks alongside and supports autistic children/young people (with or without a diagnosis), their families and professionals, celebrating diversity and ensuring everyone feels welcome regardless of background, culture, or circumstances.

3) Being in community is important- we create inclusive places and spaces where our autism community can come together, building a strong and supportive community culture where our members’ voices shape and lead our work.

4) Learning from each other – peer-to-peer support is vital, with families and children/young people sharing their experiences to help and guide others on similar journeys, while working with professionals and services to improve autism understanding

5) Supporting wellbeing and early intervention – we provide timely support that helps prevent crisis and promotes positive outcomes for autistic children/young people and their families
