Tips for neurodivergent families

Our BEAT keyworker, Emma, has put together some brilliant tips to help with easing back into school and early morning starts after the summer holidays:

  • Create a simple visual timetable; bathroom, breakfast, car etc
  • Keep the atmosphere light (fun if possible!) and if you're feeling stressed about being late, hide it and try not to use the word at all!
  • Use "I wonder" statements rather than giving orders; "I wonder if I'll get MY shoes on before YOU today!!"
  • Try not to talk too much
  • Reduce the demands and amount of choice you offer
  • Be realistic about what your child might manage in the first few weeks
  • If tears come, give them time to speak - don't let urgency overtake!
  • Get as much ready as possible the night before, so you're not rushing
  • Get up earlier so you can come round before the children wake
  • Know that there are other ways if your child struggles to go into school with the masses in the morning!
  • Speak to your Key Worker about your particular challenges
  • Remember that a child by default wants to please, so don't confuse nervous system dysregulation with bad behaviour.
